What Is an Overbite, Exactly?

An overbite is how far your upper front teeth overlap your lower front teeth vertically when you bite down.

Here’s the part most people don’t know: a small overbite is normal. Your upper teeth are supposed to cover the top 2 to 4 millimeters of your lower teeth, roughly 20 to 30 percent of the lower tooth. That overlap protects your teeth and helps you bite through food.

The problem starts when the overlap gets too deep. Once the upper teeth cover half or more of the lower teeth, orthodontists call it a deep bite or excessive overbite. In a 100 percent overbite, the lower front teeth vanish completely behind the uppers, and in the most severe cases they bite into the gum tissue on the roof of the mouth.

Overbite vs. Overjet: Not the Same Thing

Overbite vs. Underbite

An overbite means the upper teeth sit over the lower teeth. An underbite is the reverse: the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth when you close your mouth. Both are types of malocclusion, but they have different causes and are corrected differently.

A dental overbite comes from tooth position. The lower front teeth have grown up too far, or the back teeth haven’t grown in enough, so the front teeth overlap more than they should. These respond very well to braces or clear aligners alone.

What Causes an Overbite?

Most overbites are inherited. A smaller lower jaw, a longer upper jaw, or the shape of your bite is largely written into your genes, the same way your height is.

Childhood habits play a role too. Thumb sucking, pacifier use past age 3, and tongue thrusting all push the upper teeth forward and the lower teeth back. So does chronic mouth breathing, which changes how the tongue rests and how the jaws grow.

Losing baby teeth too early, missing permanent teeth, and crowding can all let the front teeth drift into a deeper bite. And nighttime teeth grinding can deepen an existing overbite over the years by wearing down the back teeth.

Why an Overbite Shouldn’t Wait

A mild overbite can be left alone. A deep one usually can’t, and the reasons aren’t cosmetic.

Your front teeth wear down. When the lower teeth slam into the backs of the upper teeth every time you bite, the enamel chips and flattens. Adults with a long-standing deep bite often have lower front teeth noticeably shorter than they were at 20.

Your gums take a beating. In a severe overbite, the lower teeth bite directly into the gum tissue behind the upper front teeth. Over time that causes recession, soreness, and gum damage that doesn’t reverse on its own.

Can you fix an overbite naturally or at home?

No. Once the teeth and jaws have developed, exercises, mewing, chewing devices, and home remedies cannot move teeth or reposition the jaw.
