How Invisalign Actually Works
Invisalign moves teeth with a series of clear plastic trays. Each tray is slightly different from the last, and that difference is what applies pressure and moves your teeth a fraction of a millimeter at a time.
You wear each set for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, then switch to the next in the series. You take them out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush.
The part most people do not know about is the attachments. Small tooth-colored bumps get bonded to certain teeth so the aligners have something to grip. Without them the trays slide off teeth instead of moving them, which is why mail-order aligner companies struggle with anything beyond mild crowding.
Bite ramps, buttons for elastics, and staged tooth movements all do work the trays alone cannot. That planning is the orthodontics. The plastic is just the delivery method.
Why Who Plans It Matters More Than Which Brand
Invisalign and Spark both make excellent aligners. Neither one plans your treatment.
A person does that, deciding which teeth move in what order, where attachments go, how the bite is handled, and what the finish should look like. That is where an orthodontist’s training shows up, and it is the difference between a case that finishes on time and a case that stalls out at tray 22.

Invisalign for Adults
About half of Murray Orthodontics patients are adults, and clear aligners are why a lot of them finally came in.
The objection we hear most is some version of "I am too old for this." You are not. Teeth move at 45 the same way they move at 15. Treatment may take a few months longer because adult bone remodels more slowly, and that is the whole difference.
The second objection is work. Nobody wants to sit through client meetings in metal braces. Aligners solve that almost entirely.
A large share of our adult cases are retreatments. You had braces as a teenager, the retainer stopped somewhere around your second year of college, and the front teeth have drifted since. That case is usually shorter and less expensive than the first round.

Invisalign for Teens
Teenagers are often better aligner candidates than their parents expect, and worse candidates than the teen expects. Both things are true.
The case for aligners: no brackets in yearbook photos, no wire emergencies before a game, no food restrictions, and easier brushing, which matters a lot during the years when brushing is a negotiation.
The case against: aligners only work while they are in the mouth. Invisalign Teen includes small blue compliance dots that fade with wear, so we can see what actually happened between visits rather than relying on the report.
Dr. Murray is straight with families about this at the consultation. If a teen is not going to wear them, braces get a better result for the same money, and we would rather say so at the start than 14 months in.

Invisalign for Kids
Younger children are evaluated case by case. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic visit by age 7, and most 7-year-olds do not need treatment yet. They need someone watching.
Murray Orthodontics runs a Growth and Development Program with free check-ins every 6 to 12 months so Dr. Murray can track how the jaws and permanent teeth are coming in and start treatment at the moment it will do the most good.
When a younger child does need an early step, usually for crowding, a narrow upper jaw, or a habit, that is handled through Phase 1 treatment rather than aligners.

3. Wear Them And Watch

Most patients notice visible change within the first two or three months.
You see Dr. Murray every 8 to 12 weeks, less often than braces require, and he checks that the teeth are tracking with the plan at every visit.
When you finish, a retainer holds the result. That part is not optional, because teeth drift back toward where they started.
What Clear Aligners Can and Cannot Fix
Aligners handle far more than they did a decade ago. Crowding, spacing, and rotations are routine. Many bite problems are treatable too, with the right attachments and elastics.
Where it gets case-specific is bite correction. Here is roughly how the common conditions break down, with the detail on each on its own page:
- Crossbite: often treatable with aligners, depending on whether the cause is tooth position or jaw width
- Overbite: mild to moderate cases respond well using precision bite ramps
- Overjet: treatable in many cases, often with elastics alongside the aligners
- Open bite: frequently a good aligner case, since aligners are effective at closing bites
- Underbite: mild dental underbites yes, skeletal underbites usually not
- Gaps between teeth: one of the things aligners do best
- Crooked and crowded teeth: the bread and butter of clear aligner treatment
Severe skeletal problems, significant rotations of round teeth, and cases needing large tooth movements often finish faster and more predictably in braces. Dr. Murray will tell you which camp you are in on day one.

Is Invisalign as effective as braces?
For most cases, yes. Braces still have an advantage with severe rotations, large tooth movements, and complex skeletal corrections, because they are fixed to the teeth and do not depend on the patient. The most important variable is not the appliance, it is who plans the treatment and whether you wear what you are given.
Can I get Invisalign if I had braces as a kid?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons adults come in. Teeth drift after treatment when retainers stop being worn, usually starting with the lower front teeth. Retreatment is often shorter and less expensive than the original round because the teeth have been moved before.
What happens if I lose an aligner?
Call the office. Depending on where you are in the series, we will usually have you go back to the previous tray or move forward to the next one while a replacement is ordered. It is not an emergency, but do not simply skip ahead without checking, because the trays are sequential and jumping the series can stall the case.
Do I have to wear a retainer afterward?
Yes, and this is not optional. Teeth have memory and will drift back toward where they started, especially in the first year. Every patient finishes with a retention plan. Patients who wear their retainers as directed keep their results for life.
Can I get Invisalign from a dentist instead of an orthodontist?
Some general dentists offer it. The difference is training: an orthodontist completes two to three years of residency after dental school focused entirely on moving teeth and correcting bites. For simple crowding the difference may not show. For anything involving the bite, it usually does. Dr. Murray is board-certified, an additional credential beyond residency.
Does insurance cover Invisalign?
Most Florida orthodontic plans cover a portion of clear aligner treatment, often the same benefit they apply to braces. Coverage is typically a lifetime maximum rather than an annual one. What is the difference between Invisalign and Spark?
Both are clear aligner systems made by different manufacturers, and both are used at Murray Orthodontics. The differences are in the material and how the trays are trimmed at the gumline. Neither is better across the board. Dr. Murray recommends whichever suits your case and tells you why.
Are mail-order aligners a cheaper version of this?
They are a different product. Direct-to-consumer companies work from an impression you take yourself, without X-rays, without an in-person exam, and usually without attachments, which limits them to mild crowding. No one examines your gums or bone before treatment or watches what happens during it.
How often are Invisalign appointments?
Typically every 8 to 12 weeks, which is less often than braces require. Most are quick progress checks to confirm the teeth are tracking with the plan. You will see Dr. Murray at each one.
Can I drink coffee with aligners in?
Water only. Coffee, tea, and anything with color will stain the trays, and hot liquids can warp the plastic. Take them out, drink, rinse, put them back. Most coffee drinkers adapt within a week.
Am I too old for Invisalign?
No. Teeth respond to pressure at any age as long as your gums and bone are healthy. Treatment can take somewhat longer for adults because bone remodels more slowly. About half of Murray Orthodontics patients are adults.
